About Us
The J. Alan Groves Center
The long-term mission of J. Alan Groves Center for Advanced Biblical Studies (The Groves Center) is to continuously explore innovations, particularly technological, in the methodology for the translation, analysis and study of the Bible.
In concrete terms, The Groves Center creates and distributes databases containing the text and linguistic analysis (morphology and syntax at present) of the Hebrew Bible. The “advanced” descriptor of the Center‘s work lies in how those databases are conceived and produced, using the latest techniques of computational linguistics and computer science in general.
The Groves Center also maintains the Westminster Leningrad Codex, now arguably the most accurate representation of the Leningrad Codex (the oldest complete version of the Hebrew Bible) in existence, and the base Hebrew text for the majority of scholarship and printed versions of the Hebrew Bible used around the globe. The Groves Center continues its work exploring the ever-developing tools of computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, and information technology, expanding the work of the Center into new areas.
The Groves Center, while dealing with religious texts, is independent of any religious organization or denomination. Its purpose is to serve the public by providing objective data and knowledge about the Bible and ancient texts, allowing the reader of those texts to study them with the known facts about those texts, especially linguistic facts.
The work of The Groves Center is funded by donations from individuals and organizations as well as by licensing fees from commercial vendors.
The Groves Center is a Public Charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, EIN 27-0801569. View our 501(c)(3) IRS Notification here.
